The neck lift, also referred to as a platysmaplasty and submental platysmaplasty, is a cosmetic procedure used to minimize the appearance of loose, sagging skin in the neck area and below the jaw line. This procedure is ideal for people who experience a fleshy or saggy neck, jowls, or neck banding.
Under local anesthesia with IV sedation, small incisions under your chin and around earlobes are made, the neck muscles can then be tightened and any excess fat removed with liposuction, the skin is re-draped over the neck. Any excess skin near the earlobes is removed and the incisions are closed with sutures.
To be a candidate for a neck lift, individuals should be in good health and free of any active diseases or pre-existing medical conditions. In addition, patients should be realistic in their expectations for the outcome of the surgery. The patients often combine a neck lift with liposuction, mini facelift, or other surgeries.
Advantages of neck lift:
Neck lift surgery is the re-creation of a sharp and well-defined jawline, done by tightening the underlying muscles that have loosened throughout the years and re-draping the skin around the area.
Ideal candidates for this procedure are men and women who experience a saggy neck, jowls, or neck banding and who are healthy and have realistic expectations for results.
Benefits of this procedure include the following:
A neck lift is performed in the well equipped procedure room under tumescent (local) anesthesia and IV sedation. Two incisions are made either under or behind the ear, and a small incision is made under the chin. Sections of skin are trimmed, lifted into place and sutured.to firm up appearance of the neck. Then, a section of fat and muscle is removed and the ends are sutured together at the mid-anterior (front) section of the neck. Surgeons may also perform liposuction on the neck to remove fat deposits from the neck.
The procedure takes about 2 to 3 hours.
Any leftover scars are generally small and well-hidden. Incisions are done behind the ears and under the chin.
Patients can typically return to normal activities within the first week, depending on the patient's condition.
There will be some swelling and bruising, which will take about 1-2 weeks to heal. During the first week, a lightly compressive dressing must be worn around the neck to keep the swelling down and help the skin contract.
Patients sometimes undergo a mini face lift, liposuction, or fat transfer in addition to receiving a neck lift. Excess fat under the chin can be removed either by liposuction.
Results of an improved appearance are immediate and become more obvious when the swelling and bruising go down within two weeks. Skin contraction will start by the fourth week and will continue until about six months. By the sixth month, you will be able to see your final result.
Complications and risks of a neck lift procedure may include asymmetry, nerve injury, infection, unfavorable scarring, and blood and fluid collection. However, these complications are rare.
